Solar Installation in Adelaide: The Complete Guide

Adelaide is one of the best cities in the world to go solar. We get more sunshine hours than almost anywhere else in Australia, electricity prices are among the highest in the country, and the South Australian government has consistently supported renewable energy. If you've been thinking about solar, there has never been a better time to make the switch.

This guide covers everything you need to know — from choosing the right system size to understanding rebates, and what actually happens on installation day.

Why Adelaide Is Perfect for Solar

South Australia averages around 5.5 peak sun hours per day, which is exceptional. That means a well-installed solar system here will generate significantly more energy than the same system in Melbourne or Sydney.

Combine that with SA's high electricity tariffs — often above 35 cents per kilowatt-hour — and the maths becomes very compelling. A typical Adelaide household can reduce their electricity bill by 60–90% with the right solar setup.

How Much Does Solar Cost in Adelaide?

Solar prices have dropped dramatically over the past decade. Here's a rough guide for 2026:

6.6kW system (most popular for average homes): $4,500 – $7,000 installed 10kW system (larger homes or high usage): $7,000 – $11,000 installed 13kW+ system (with EV or pool): $10,000 – $15,000 installed

These prices are after the federal Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) rebate is applied — more on that below.

The exact price depends on the brand of panels and inverter, your roof type, and how complex the installation is (single storey vs double storey, tile vs metal roof, etc.).

Understanding Solar Rebates in Adelaide

Federal STC Rebate

The main rebate available to Adelaide homeowners is the federal government's Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme. This is a point-of-sale discount — your installer claims it on your behalf and passes the saving directly to you.

The rebate amount depends on your system size and your location's solar zone rating. Adelaide sits in Zone 3, which is one of the better zones in Australia. For a 6.6kW system in 2026, the STC rebate is typically worth $2,000–$3,000.

Important: The STC scheme is being phased down by one-fifteenth each year until 2030. The sooner you install, the larger the rebate you receive.

SA Home Battery Scheme

If you're adding a battery to your solar system, South Australia's Home Battery Scheme offers a subsidised loan of up to $10,000 at a low interest rate. This makes battery storage significantly more accessible for Adelaide households. Golden Power Electrical is a fully approved retailer.

What Size Solar System Do You Need?

Choosing the right system size is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Too small and you won't offset enough of your bill. Too large and you may be exporting excess power at a low feed-in tariff rate.

Here's a simple starting point:

Average daily usage under 15kWh: A 6.6kW system is usually ideal Daily usage 15–25kWh: Consider a 10kW system Daily usage over 25kWh, or you have an EV: Look at 13kW+

Your electricity bill shows your daily average usage in kWh — that's the number to work from. If you're planning to add an EV charger or a pool heat pump in the future, factor that in now so you don't undersize your system.

Choosing the Right Solar Panels and Inverter

Not all solar equipment is created equal. Here's what to look for:

Solar Panels

Look for panels with a 25-year product warranty and a performance warranty guaranteeing at least 80% output after 25 years. Tier 1 manufacturers like Jinko, LONGi, REC, and SunPower consistently deliver on these warranties.

Avoid panels from unknown brands with no Australian presence — if the company disappears, your warranty is worthless.

Inverters

The inverter converts DC power from your panels into AC power your home can use. It's the hardest-working component in your system.

String inverters (like Fronius and SMA) are reliable and cost-effective for straightforward roofs.

Microinverters (like Enphase) work panel-by-panel, which is ideal if you have shading from trees or a complex roof orientation.

Hybrid inverters are the smart choice if you're planning to add a battery now or in the future — they're designed to work with battery storage from day one.

Does Your Switchboard Need an Upgrade?

This is a question we get asked a lot. The honest answer: it depends on your current switchboard.

Older switchboards with ceramic fuses or early circuit breakers often need to be upgraded before solar can be safely installed. Modern switchboards with safety switches (RCDs) are usually fine.

A licensed electrician will assess your switchboard as part of the quoting process. If an upgrade is needed, it's better to do it at the same time as your solar installation — it saves on call-out costs and ensures everything is compliant from day one.

What Happens on Installation Day?

Most residential solar installations in Adelaide take one day. Here's what to expect:

Morning: The installation team arrives and assesses the roof. Panels are mounted on the racking system, which is fixed to your roof structure — not just the tiles.

Midday: Panels are wired together and connected to the inverter, which is typically mounted in your garage or on an external wall near your switchboard.

Afternoon: The inverter is connected to your switchboard. Your electrician will test the system and ensure everything is working correctly before leaving.

After installation: Your installer submits the required paperwork to SA Power Networks (SAPN) to connect your system to the grid. This process takes 5–15 business days. Until approval comes through, your system will be running in "island mode" — generating power for your home but not exporting to the grid.

How Long Until You Break Even?

For most Adelaide households, the payback period on a quality solar system is 4–6 years. After that, you're generating essentially free electricity for the remaining 20+ years of the system's life.

The payback period depends on:

  • How much of the solar power you use directly (self-consumption)
  • Your electricity tariff rate
  • The feed-in tariff you receive for exported power
  • How much sun your roof gets

Homes that are occupied during the day — retirees, people who work from home, or households with a pool or EV — typically see the fastest payback because they use more of the solar power directly rather than exporting it.

Why Choose a CEC Accredited Installer?

The Clean Energy Council (CEC) is Australia's peak body for the clean energy industry. CEC accreditation means your installer has completed formal training, passed assessments, and is bound by a code of conduct.

Only CEC accredited installers can access the federal STC rebate on your behalf. If you use a non-accredited installer, you lose the rebate — which can be worth thousands of dollars.

CEC accreditation also gives you recourse if something goes wrong. The CEC has a complaints process and can take action against accredited installers who don't meet standards.

Golden Power Electrical is fully CEC accredited. Dylan holds both his SA Electrical Licence and CEC accreditation, and every installation meets Australian Standards AS/NZS 5033 and AS 4777.

Ready to Go Solar?

Going solar is one of the best financial decisions an Adelaide homeowner can make right now. With high electricity prices, excellent sunshine, and strong rebates still available, the numbers stack up better than ever.

The best next step is to get a proper assessment of your home — roof orientation, shading, current usage, and switchboard condition all affect what system is right for you.
