EV Charger Installation Guide for Adelaide Homeowners

Electric vehicles are becoming a common sight on Adelaide streets, and one of the first questions new EV owners ask is: how do I charge at home properly? Plugging into a standard power point works in a pinch, but a dedicated home EV charger is faster, safer, and far more convenient.

This guide covers everything you need to know about getting a home EV charger installed in Adelaide — from choosing the right charger to what happens on the day of installation.

If you're also considering solar to power your EV for free, our complete solar installation guide for Adelaide homeowners is a great companion read.

Why You Need a Dedicated Home EV Charger

Most EVs come with a portable charging cable that plugs into a standard 10-amp power point. This is called Level 1 charging, and it's painfully slow — typically adding only 10–15km of range per hour. For most Adelaide drivers, that means leaving your car plugged in all night just to recover a day's worth of driving.

A dedicated Level 2 home charger (also called an EVSE — Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) operates on a 32-amp circuit and can add 50–100km of range per hour depending on your vehicle. Most Adelaide drivers can fully charge overnight in 4–8 hours.

Beyond speed, a dedicated charger is also safer. Standard power points aren't designed for continuous high-current loads over many hours. A dedicated circuit with the right protection is the correct way to charge an EV at home.

How Much Does a Home EV Charger Cost in Adelaide?

Here's a realistic cost guide for 2026:

Charger unit only (supply): $500 – $1,500 depending on brand and features

Installation (labour + materials): $400 – $900 for a straightforward install

Total installed cost: $900 – $2,400 for most Adelaide homes

The main variables that affect cost are:

Distance from switchboard to garage. The longer the cable run, the more materials and labour. A garage directly adjacent to the switchboard is the simplest scenario. A detached garage or a charger on the opposite side of the house adds cost.

Switchboard condition. If your switchboard is older and doesn't have a spare circuit breaker position, or if it needs safety switches added, there may be additional switchboard work required. See the section below on switchboard requirements.

Three-phase vs single-phase supply. Most Adelaide homes have single-phase power, which is perfectly adequate for home EV charging. If you have three-phase supply, you have more charger options available.

Trenching for underground cable. If the cable needs to run underground to a detached garage, trenching adds to the cost.

Types of Home EV Chargers

Tethered vs Untethered

Tethered chargers have the charging cable permanently attached to the unit. They're convenient — you just grab the cable and plug in. Most residential installations use tethered chargers.

Untethered chargers have a socket on the unit and you use your own cable. These are more flexible if you have multiple EVs with different connector types, but less convenient for daily use.

Single-phase vs Three-phase Chargers

Single-phase chargers (7.4kW) are the standard choice for Adelaide homes. They charge at up to 7.4kW, adding roughly 40–50km of range per hour for most EVs. This is more than enough for overnight charging.

Three-phase chargers (11kW or 22kW) charge faster but require three-phase power at your property. Most Adelaide homes don't have three-phase, and for residential use the extra speed rarely matters — you're charging overnight anyway.

Smart Chargers

Smart chargers connect to your home Wi-Fi and let you schedule charging, monitor energy use, and in some cases integrate with your solar system to charge only when the sun is shining. If you have solar or are planning to get it, a smart charger is worth the modest extra cost.

Which EV Charger Brands Do We Install?

We install a range of quality chargers to suit different budgets and requirements:

Tesla Wall Connector

The Wall Connector is the natural choice for Tesla owners. It integrates seamlessly with the Tesla app, supports load balancing if you have multiple Teslas, and has a clean, minimalist design. It's also compatible with other EVs via an adapter.

Wallbox Pulsar Plus

The Wallbox Pulsar Plus is a compact, smart charger that works with all EVs. It has excellent app integration, supports solar charging schedules, and is one of the more affordable smart charger options. A popular choice for non-Tesla EV owners.

Ocular IQ

The Ocular IQ is an Australian-designed smart charger with strong solar integration features. It can communicate directly with compatible solar inverters to maximise solar self-consumption when charging your EV — a great option if you have or are planning solar.

Zappi

The Zappi by myenergi is specifically designed for solar-integrated EV charging. It has three charging modes: fast (grid power), eco (uses surplus solar when available), and eco+ (waits for surplus solar before charging). If maximising solar self-consumption is your priority, the Zappi is worth considering.

Switchboard Requirements

Before an EV charger can be installed, your switchboard needs to meet current Australian electrical standards. Specifically:

A spare circuit breaker position for the dedicated EV charger circuit. Most modern switchboards have spare positions. Older boards may need a sub-board or upgrade.

RCD (safety switch) protection on the EV charger circuit. This is a legal requirement under Australian wiring rules.

Adequate main fuse capacity. A 7.4kW EV charger draws around 32 amps. If your main fuse is already near capacity with other loads, this needs to be assessed.

If your home has an older switchboard with ceramic fuses or no safety switches, a switchboard upgrade will be required before the EV charger can be installed. This is also a good opportunity to bring the rest of your electrical system up to current standards.

Charging Your EV for Free with Solar

This is where home EV charging gets really interesting. If you have a solar system, you can charge your EV using power you've generated yourself — effectively for free.

The maths works like this: a typical Adelaide solar system generates 20–30kWh on a sunny day. A full charge for most EVs requires 40–80kWh. So on a good day, you can recover 50–100km of range purely from solar.

To maximise solar charging, you have a few options:

Schedule charging during the day. If you work from home or your car is parked during the day, simply schedule your charger to run between 10am and 3pm when solar generation is highest.

Use a solar-aware smart charger. Chargers like the Zappi or Ocular IQ can automatically detect surplus solar and start charging when you're generating more than you're using. This is the most hands-off approach.

Combine with a battery. If you have a home battery, you can store surplus solar during the day and use it to charge your EV in the evening. This works well for people who get home after dark and want to charge overnight from stored solar.

We've installed dozens of solar + EV charger combinations across Adelaide. The combination is one of the best investments an Adelaide homeowner can make — you're essentially locking in free fuel for your car for the next 20+ years.

What Happens on Installation Day?

Here's what to expect when we install your EV charger:

1. Site assessment (usually done at quote stage). We check the switchboard, measure the cable run distance, confirm the mounting location, and identify any obstacles.

2. Switchboard work. We install a dedicated 32-amp circuit breaker and RCD for the EV charger circuit. This typically takes 30–60 minutes.

3. Cable installation. We run the cable from the switchboard to the charger location. For most installations this is surface-mounted conduit; for a cleaner finish we can run cables through the wall cavity where accessible.

4. Charger mounting and connection. The charger is mounted to the wall and connected to the circuit. We test the installation and confirm everything is working correctly.

5. App setup (for smart chargers). We connect the charger to your Wi-Fi and help you set up the app, including any solar charging schedules if applicable.

Most installations take 2–4 hours. You'll be charging your car the same day.

Do You Need a Permit or Inspection?

Yes. In South Australia, EV charger installation is electrical work and must be carried out by a licensed electrician. We handle all the required compliance documentation — you don't need to do anything separately.

All our installations comply with AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules and SA Power Networks requirements.

Common Questions

Can I install an EV charger in a rental property? You'll need landlord permission. Some landlords are open to it, especially if the charger adds value to the property. We can provide a quote and specification document to help you make the case.

What if I have a strata or body corporate? You'll need body corporate approval for any work affecting common property (such as running cables through shared walls or installing in a shared garage). We can provide documentation to support your application.

Will an EV charger affect my electricity bill? It will increase your consumption, but the cost per kilometre is still significantly lower than petrol. With solar, the marginal cost can be close to zero. Most Adelaide EV owners find their electricity bill increases by $30–$80 per month without solar, depending on how much they drive.

How long does the charger last? Quality EV chargers are designed to last 10–15 years. Most come with a 2–3 year warranty; some brands offer longer.

Can I take the charger with me if I move? Yes. EV chargers are not fixed to the property — they're connected via a circuit, not hardwired in. We can disconnect and reinstall at your new address.

Getting a Quote

EV charger installation is one of the more straightforward electrical jobs, and most Adelaide homes are well-suited for it. The main variable is the cable run distance and switchboard condition — both of which we assess at quote stage.
